Transmission Fluid Change: When Your Transmission Needs Service

FlexFix Team

Your transmission is the second most expensive component in your vehicle after the engine. Proper fluid maintenance can extend its life by tens of thousands of miles. Here is what Houston drivers need to know about transmission fluid service.

What transmission fluid does

Transmission fluid serves multiple purposes — it lubricates gears and bearings, provides hydraulic pressure for gear changes (in automatics), cools internal components, and cleans deposits from metal surfaces. Over time, the fluid breaks down from heat and loses these properties.

When to change transmission fluid

Many manufacturers recommend transmission fluid changes at 60,000 to 100,000 miles for automatic transmissions. However, if you frequently drive in stop-and-go Houston traffic, tow trailers, or drive in extreme heat (every Houston summer qualifies), you should service the fluid every 30,000 to 60,000 miles.

Check the fluid condition: healthy transmission fluid is red or light pink and has a slightly sweet smell. Dark brown or black fluid with a burnt smell indicates overheated, degraded fluid that is no longer protecting internal components.

Flush vs drain and fill

A transmission flush forces new fluid through the entire system under pressure. A drain and fill removes about 40 to 60 percent of the old fluid and replaces it with fresh fluid. For vehicles with high mileage that have never had the fluid changed, a drain and fill is usually safer than a full flush — forcing new detergent-laden fluid through a system full of old deposits can dislodge debris and cause shifting problems.

Signs your transmission needs attention

Delayed engagement — a pause between shifting into Drive or Reverse and the transmission actually engaging. Slipping — the engine revs rise without corresponding acceleration. Hard or rough shifts — jerky gear changes. Fluid leak — red fluid under the vehicle, usually near the front or center. Whining or humming noise that changes with vehicle speed.

Mobile transmission fluid service

FlexFix performs transmission drain-and-fill service at your location in Katy, Sugar Land, Cypress, and greater Houston. We use the correct fluid specification for your transmission and check for leaks during the service.
