Catalytic Converter Theft: What Houston Drivers Should Know

FlexFix Team

Catalytic converter theft has been a growing problem in Houston and across Texas. Thieves target converters for the precious metals inside — platinum, palladium, and rhodium — which can be worth $100-500 per converter at a scrap yard.

Which vehicles are targeted most:

Toyota Prius — hybrid converters contain more precious metals because they process fewer exhaust cycles.

Toyota Tundra and Tacoma — higher ground clearance makes access easy.

Honda Accord and CR-V — common vehicles with relatively accessible converters.

Ford F-150 and F-250 — truck height allows a thief to slide under without a jack.

Any vehicle with high ground clearance — SUVs and trucks are easier targets than sedans.

How you know it happened: You start your car and it sounds like a race car — extremely loud, with no muffling. There may be a check engine light. Looking under the car, you will see a gap in the exhaust piping where the converter was cut out.

What to do if yours is stolen:

1. File a police report immediately (required for insurance claims) 2. Check your insurance — comprehensive coverage typically covers catalytic converter theft 3. Do not drive the car extensively without the converter — the open exhaust can cause exhaust fumes in the cabin and will throw engine codes 4. Get a replacement installed — aftermarket converters are significantly less expensive than OEM

Prevention measures:

Catalytic converter shield — aftermarket plates that bolt over the converter, making it harder and noisier to cut. Not foolproof but adds significant deterrent.

Parking in well-lit areas — thieves avoid lit, busy locations.

Garage parking when possible — the most effective prevention.

Security cameras — visible cameras deter opportunistic thieves.

VIN etching on the converter — some police departments offer free etching events. A marked converter is harder to sell at scrap yards that check.

Anti-theft alarm systems — vibration-sensitive alarms that trigger if someone works under the car.

What we can help with: If your converter was stolen, we can assess the damage, provide options for replacement (OEM vs aftermarket), and in some cases install the replacement on-site. We can also recommend and install catalytic converter shields as a preventive measure.

Stay aware, especially if you drive a targeted vehicle. Park smart, and consider a shield if your car sits in open parking lots regularly.
