Spring Car Maintenance Checklist for Houston Drivers

FlexFix Team

Spring in Houston means rising temperatures, increasing humidity, and the transition from mild weather to brutal summer heat. Here is a maintenance checklist to prepare your vehicle for the months ahead.

Cooling system check

Houston summers will push your cooling system to the limit. Spring is the time to check coolant level and condition — old, discolored coolant loses its corrosion-inhibiting properties. Inspect hoses for softness, swelling, or cracks. Check the radiator cap seal. Verify the electric cooling fan operates when the engine reaches operating temperature. A cooling system failure in July on I-45 can destroy an engine.

AC system tune-up

Test the AC now, before you desperately need it. Turn it on and verify it blows cold air within 30 to 60 seconds. Listen for unusual noises from the compressor. If cooling seems weak, the system may be low on refrigerant — a recharge now is easier and cheaper than an emergency service in August.

Battery health check

If your battery survived winter without issue, it does not mean it will survive summer. Heat is the number one battery killer. A load test reveals whether the battery has enough reserve capacity for the demands of summer driving (AC, fans, and accessories all drawing power simultaneously). Replace proactively if the battery is over three years old.

Brake inspection

Spring road trips mean highway driving. Verify brake pad thickness, rotor condition, and brake fluid level. Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time, which lowers its boiling point — a concern when braking hard in summer heat.

Tire check

Inspect tread depth (penny test: insert a penny head-first into the tread — if you can see all of Lincoln's head, the tire needs replacement). Check for uneven wear patterns that indicate alignment issues. Verify tire pressure matches the door placard specification.

Wiper blades and washer fluid

Houston spring brings thunderstorms. Old wipers that streak or chatter need replacement before the first heavy rain. Fill the washer fluid reservoir — pollen season coats windshields with a film that requires washer fluid to clear.
