Towing vs Mobile Mechanic: When Each Makes Sense in Houston
Your car broke down. Do you call a tow truck or a mobile mechanic? The right answer depends on the situation, and choosing correctly can save you money and time.
Call a mobile mechanic when:
The car is in a safe location — your driveway, a parking lot, your workplace, or a wide shoulder. Safe access is essential for us to work.
The problem is likely fixable on-site — dead battery, failed starter, alternator failure, overheating that has stopped, belt failure, flat tire, electrical no-start. These are our bread and butter.
You want diagnosis before committing to a shop — if you do not know what is wrong, a $60 mobile diagnostic tells you the problem. This information is valuable whether we fix it on-site or you decide to tow it to a shop. You avoid paying for two diagnostics.
The car can wait — it is at home and not blocking anything. There is no urgency to move it immediately.
Advantages: lower cost (no tow fee), diagnosis and repair in one visit, no shop waiting room, car stays at your location.
Call a tow truck when:
You are in an unsafe location — narrow highway shoulder, blind curve, busy intersection. Safety trumps everything. Get the car to a safe location first.
The car cannot roll — transmission failure, seized engine, locked wheel. If the car cannot move at all, it needs a flatbed.
Extensive mechanical failure — if the car clearly needs major work (engine knocking, transmission grinding, collision damage), it needs a shop with a lift and specialized equipment.
You are blocking traffic — even if the problem might be fixable on-site, if you are blocking a lane or creating a hazard, the car needs to move first.
You need it at a body shop — collision damage requires a body shop, and the car needs to get there somehow.
The hybrid approach:
Sometimes the best strategy is mobile diagnosis first, then decide. We arrive, determine the problem, and advise: - "This is a starter — we can replace it right here in an hour." No tow needed. - "This is an internal transmission failure — you need a tow to a transmission specialist." Now you know where to tow it and what to expect.
The worst scenario is towing to a shop without knowing the problem, paying the shop's diagnostic fee, and then learning the repair is something a mobile mechanic could have handled at your location for less total cost.
Our diagnostic fee is $60 and applies toward any repair we perform. A tow in Houston costs $75-150 minimum, plus the shop's diagnostic fee ($100-180). The math often favors calling us first.
