End-of-Year Car Maintenance: Start the New Year with a Reliable Vehicle

FlexFix Team

The end of the year is a natural checkpoint for your car's health. Before the holiday road trips, the New Year's Eve drives, and the fresh start of January, here is what to address.

Review your maintenance history: When was your last oil change? Brake inspection? Coolant service? If you cannot remember, it has probably been too long. Pull out your receipts or service records and check what is due.

Oil change: If you are within 2,000 miles of your next change, do it before the year ends. Fresh oil going into winter (even Houston's mild version) protects the engine better than oil that has been running for 8,000 miles.

Battery health: The average car battery lasts 2-4 years in Houston. If yours is approaching that age, get it load-tested. A battery failure on Christmas morning or New Year's Eve is nobody's idea of a good time.

Brakes: Holiday driving adds miles. If you have been hearing any noise, feeling any vibration, or noticing longer stopping distances, get the brakes inspected before you load up the car for a trip to see family.

Tires: Check tread depth, tire pressure, and look for damage. Road trip on worn tires is a blowout risk. If tires are marginal, replace them before holiday driving.

Lights: All headlights, tail lights, brake lights, and turn signals should be working. More driving happens in darkness during the shorter days of December. A burned-out headlight reduces your visibility and safety.

Wipers and washer fluid: December and January bring fog, mist, and occasional rain to Houston. Make sure wipers clear cleanly and the washer fluid reservoir is full.

AC and heater: Check both. Houston December weather can swing from 40 degrees in the morning to 75 in the afternoon. You might need the heater in the morning and AC by lunch. Both systems should function.

Emergency kit: Refresh water bottles, check your phone charger, make sure the flashlight works, and verify jumper cables or a jump pack are in the trunk.

Fluid top-off: Check and top off coolant, brake fluid, power steering fluid, and windshield washer fluid. A five-minute check prevents inconvenient surprises.

Our end-of-year inspection: Our $60 mobile diagnostic covers all of the items above. We come to your driveway in Katy, Sugar Land, Cypress, or anywhere in Houston and give your car a thorough check before the holiday season.
