Mobile Oil Leak Diagnosis in Houston: Finding the Source
Oil spots on your Houston driveway are not just unsightly — they indicate a leak that can lead to engine damage if the oil level drops too low. Here is how a mobile mechanic identifies the source.
Common oil leak locations
Valve cover gaskets — the most common leak on high-mileage engines. Oil seeps from the gasket at the top of the engine and drips down the sides. Oil pan gasket — the pan at the bottom of the engine develops leaks at the gasket or from impact damage (speed bumps, parking curbs). Oil filter — a loose or double-gasketed filter (the old gasket stuck to the block when the filter was changed). Rear main seal — a seal at the back of the engine where the crankshaft exits. Expensive to access but common on high-mileage vehicles. Timing cover gasket — oil seeps from the front of the engine. Oil pressure sending unit — a small sensor that can develop a leak at its seal.
How we diagnose on-site
We clean the engine and surrounding area, then use UV dye added to the engine oil. After running the engine, we use a UV light to trace the fluorescent dye to the exact leak point. This method is far more accurate than trying to trace oil drips by sight alone — oil travels along engine surfaces and drips far from the actual leak source.
Common misconception about oil leaks
A small seep is not the same as a drip. Many engines develop minor seepage at gaskets with age that never progresses to a significant leak. If the leak is not losing enough oil to affect the level between changes, monitoring is often more sensible than repairing.
