AC Not Blowing Cold? Common Causes for Houston Drivers

FlexFix Team

In Houston, your AC isn't a luxury — it's survival equipment. When it stops blowing cold, you need answers fast. Here are the most common causes we see as mobile mechanics in the Katy, Sugar Land, and Houston area.

Low refrigerant (the #1 cause):

AC systems are sealed, so if refrigerant is low, there's a leak somewhere. It might be a slow leak from an aging O-ring, a corroded condenser, or a damaged hose fitting. We can recharge the system and add UV dye to trace the leak source.

Important: Simply recharging without finding the leak is a temporary fix. Those $30 cans from the auto parts store? They'll get you through a week, but the refrigerant will leak out again. And some contain sealant that can damage your system long-term.

Compressor clutch not engaging:

If the compressor clutch doesn't click on, the system can't compress refrigerant. This could be electrical (blown fuse, bad relay, faulty pressure switch) or mechanical (compressor failure). We diagnose the electrical side first because it's often a $20 relay, not a $600 compressor.

Blend door actuator stuck:

Your car mixes hot and cold air using a blend door. If the actuator that controls it fails, you might get only hot air even though the AC compressor is running fine. Common on many Ford, GM, and Toyota models.

Clogged cabin air filter:

A dirty cabin filter restricts airflow. It won't stop cooling entirely, but it'll make the AC feel weak. We check this during every diagnostic — it's a 2-minute swap on most vehicles.

Condenser blockage:

Your AC condenser sits in front of the radiator. Road debris, bugs, and dirt can block airflow through it, reducing cooling efficiency. We inspect this visually during diagnostics.

What mobile AC service includes:

We carry manifold gauges, a refrigerant recovery/recharge machine, UV dye, and leak detection tools. Most AC diagnostics and recharges can be done in your driveway. If we find a major component failure that needs shop-level work, we'll tell you honestly.

Houston heat doesn't wait — call or text for same-day or next-day AC service.
