Windshield Chip Repair: Fix It Before Houston Heat Spreads the Crack

FlexFix Team

A rock kicked up on the Katy Freeway put a chip in your windshield. It is the size of a quarter and you figure you will deal with it later. In Houston, later is a mistake — heat makes chips spread into cracks.

Why chips spread in Houston:

Thermal stress — when your windshield heats up in the sun (glass surface temperatures can exceed 150 degrees on a Houston summer day) and then you blast the AC creating a cold interior, the temperature differential stresses the glass. A chip is a structural weak point where that stress concentrates, and the crack extends.

Direct sunlight — UV radiation weakens the resin at the edge of a chip, making it more prone to cracking.

Humidity cycling — moisture enters the chip, and when the glass heats up, it expands. This repeated cycle gradually deepens the chip.

Vibration — Houston road surfaces, highway speeds, and bass from your stereo all vibrate the glass. Each vibration stresses the chip edges.

When a chip can be repaired: - Smaller than a quarter in diameter - Not directly in the driver's primary line of sight (repairs leave a slight distortion) - Not at the edge of the windshield (edge cracks compromise structural integrity) - Not too deep (through both layers of laminated glass)

When you need a full windshield replacement: - Crack longer than 6 inches - Multiple cracks radiating from the chip - Chip in the driver's direct line of sight that causes distortion after repair - Edge crack (within 2 inches of the windshield border) - Damage to both layers of laminated glass

Cost comparison: Chip repair: $50-100, takes 30 minutes, insurance often covers it with no deductible. Windshield replacement: $200-500+ depending on vehicle and features (rain sensors, lane departure cameras, heated windshields), may require recalibration of ADAS cameras ($100-300 additional).

What we can help with: We do not perform windshield chip repair ourselves, but we can assess the damage during any service visit and advise whether repair or replacement is appropriate. We can also recommend trusted glass shops in the Houston area.

The action item: if you have a chip, get it repaired this week. Do not wait for the next 100-degree day to turn a $75 repair into a $400 windshield replacement. The math is simple.
