Exhaust Smell Inside Your Car: Causes and Dangers

FlexFix Team

If you smell exhaust fumes inside your car while driving in Houston, take it seriously. Carbon monoxide from exhaust is odorless, but the associated exhaust smell contains other detectable compounds that serve as a warning. Here is what causes exhaust smell in the cabin and why it is dangerous.

Why exhaust enters the cabin

Exhaust manifold leak — a cracked manifold or failed gasket allows exhaust gases to escape under the hood. These gases can enter the cabin through the HVAC fresh air intake at the base of the windshield. Exhaust pipe or muffler damage — rust holes, loose clamps, or a damaged flex pipe can release exhaust under the vehicle, which gets pulled into the cabin through floor seals or trunk weatherstripping. Catalytic converter cracks — the converter sits under the vehicle and can develop cracks from heat cycling. Failed exhaust gaskets at pipe connections.

The carbon monoxide danger

Carbon monoxide is produced by incomplete combustion in your engine. Normal exhaust systems route it safely out the tailpipe behind the vehicle. When exhaust leaks occur upstream of the catalytic converter, CO concentrations are highest. Symptoms of CO exposure include headache, dizziness, nausea, confusion, and drowsiness — which are especially dangerous while driving.

If you smell exhaust inside your car, roll down the windows immediately and drive to a safe location. Do not drive the vehicle with windows closed until the leak is repaired.

On-site exhaust diagnosis

FlexFix diagnoses exhaust leaks at your location in Katy, Sugar Land, Cypress, and greater Houston. Common on-site repairs include exhaust manifold gasket replacement, flex pipe repair, and clamp and connection tightening. Larger exhaust repairs may need a shop with a welding setup.
