Do I Need a Tune-Up? What That Actually Means in 2026

FlexFix Team

The term "tune-up" dates back to when cars had carburetors, ignition points, and distributors that needed regular adjustment. Modern cars do not have any of those. So what does a tune-up mean today?

What a modern tune-up includes:

Spark plug replacement — the centerpiece of a modern tune-up. Spark plugs wear over time and their electrode gap widens, requiring more voltage to fire. Fresh plugs restore efficient combustion, improve fuel economy, and smooth out the idle.

Ignition coil inspection — we check coils for cracks, carbon tracking, and proper resistance. Weak coils cause misfires that worsen over time.

Air filter replacement — a clogged engine air filter restricts airflow and reduces power and fuel efficiency. Replacement takes 5 minutes on most vehicles.

Fuel filter (if serviceable) — some vehicles have an external fuel filter that should be replaced periodically. Many modern cars have a lifetime filter inside the fuel tank.

Throttle body cleaning — carbon buildup on the throttle plate affects idle quality and throttle response. Cleaning restores smooth operation.

PCV valve check — the positive crankcase ventilation valve is a small but important emissions and engine health component. A stuck PCV valve can cause oil leaks, increased oil consumption, and rough idle.

Visual inspection of belts, hoses, and fluid condition — while we are working under the hood, we check everything visible for wear and degradation.

When to get a tune-up:

Follow your owner's manual intervals. Most modern vehicles need spark plugs every 60,000-100,000 miles. Air filters are typically every 15,000-30,000 miles but should be checked more often in dusty conditions.

Signs a tune-up might help: - Reduced fuel economy - Rough or uneven idle - Sluggish acceleration - Hard starting - Check engine light with misfire codes

What a tune-up will NOT fix: A tune-up is maintenance, not a cure-all. If your car has a significant mechanical problem — transmission issues, major oil leak, suspension wear, brake problems — fresh spark plugs will not help. If a shop recommends a tune-up for a specific driveability complaint without diagnosing first, that is a red flag.

Our approach: We diagnose first, then recommend. If your car needs plugs and a filter, we say so. If it needs something else entirely, we tell you that instead. No unnecessary work.
