Preparing Your Car for a Texas Summer: A Houston Driver's Checklist
Houston summers don't play around. Temperatures above 95 degrees for months, humidity that makes everything corrode faster, and afternoon thunderstorms that flood streets in minutes. Your car needs to be ready. Here's what to check before the heat peaks.
Cooling system: - Coolant level and condition (should be the correct color for your vehicle, not brown or rusty) - Radiator hoses for soft spots, cracks, or swelling (heat accelerates rubber degradation) - Radiator cap seal (a weak cap reduces system pressure and lowers the boiling point) - Cooling fans (electric fans should kick on when the AC is running — if they don't, you'll overheat in traffic) - Thermostat operation (a stuck thermostat is a cheap part that causes expensive overheating)
Air conditioning: - Does it blow cold at idle? (AC works harder in stop-and-go traffic — test it there, not on the highway) - Any strange smells from the vents? (Mold in the evaporator is common in Houston humidity) - Cabin air filter (replace it — a clogged filter makes your AC work harder and smell worse)
Battery: - Load test the battery (not just voltage — actual CCA capacity) - Clean terminals and check for corrosion - If the battery is over 2 years old in Houston, it's living on borrowed time
Tires: - Check tread depth (penny test: if you see all of Lincoln's head, you need tires) - Check tire pressure when tires are cold (heat increases pressure — overinflated tires are dangerous too) - Look for sidewall cracks or bulges (heat and UV damage rubber)
Belts: - Serpentine belt for cracks, glazing, or fraying - Belt tensioner for smooth operation (a weak tensioner causes squealing and eventual belt failure)
Wipers and washer fluid: - Houston summer means afternoon storms. Old wipers streak and reduce visibility when you need it most - Fill washer fluid — bug splatter in summer is relentless
Emergency kit: - Water bottles (for you, not the radiator) - Phone charger - Basic tools and flashlight - Jumper cables or a portable jump pack
