Car Won't Pass Inspection? Common Failures and How We Help

FlexFix Team

Texas requires annual safety inspections for most vehicles. If your car failed — or you suspect it might — here are the most common reasons and what we can do as your mobile mechanic before you go back.

Note: Texas eliminated the separate emissions-only test in most counties. The annual safety inspection now covers mechanical and safety components.

Most common inspection failures:

Lighting issues: Burned-out headlight, brake light, turn signal, or license plate light. This is the single most common reason for failure — and the easiest to fix. We replace bulbs on-site for most vehicles.

Windshield condition: Cracks, chips, or damage in the driver's direct line of sight can cause failure. We do not replace windshields, but we can advise on whether your crack is in the fail zone.

Tire condition: Tread depth below 2/32 of an inch, exposed cords, sidewall damage, or mismatched tire sizes (on the same axle) will fail. We inspect tires and advise on replacement needs.

Brake issues: Excessive pad wear, non-functional brake lights, leaking brake fluid, or a spongy pedal can cause failure. We perform full brake service — pads, rotors, fluid — in your driveway.

Windshield wipers: Wipers that streak, skip, or have torn rubber fail inspection. Replacement takes 5 minutes and costs under $30 for most vehicles.

Horn not working: A non-functional horn is an automatic failure. This can be a blown fuse, a bad relay, or a failed horn unit. We diagnose and repair horn circuits on-site.

Check engine light: If the check engine light is on during inspection, the vehicle fails. Even if the underlying issue is minor, the light must be off. We diagnose check engine lights with professional scan tools and repair the cause — not just clear the light (which will come back before the drive cycle completes).

Steering and suspension: Excessive play in the steering wheel (before the wheels start turning) or severely worn suspension components can fail. We inspect and replace tie rod ends, ball joints, and other components as needed.

Window tint (too dark): We cannot help with this one — if your tint is below Texas legal limits, it needs to be removed or replaced by a tint shop.

Our approach: Schedule a mobile pre-inspection check. We go through the same items the inspection station checks and fix anything that will cause a failure. Then you go to the inspection station confident that you will pass.

Serving Katy, Sugar Land, Cypress, and greater Houston. Call or text to schedule your pre-inspection check.
