EV and Hybrid Maintenance: What a Mobile Mechanic Can Handle

FlexFix Team

If you drive a Toyota Prius, Ford Escape Hybrid, Tesla, Hyundai Ioniq, or any other electric or hybrid vehicle in Houston, you might think you need a specialist for everything. The truth is, EVs and hybrids still need many of the same services as conventional cars — and a mobile mechanic can handle most of them.

What we service on EVs and hybrids:

12-volt battery — every EV and hybrid has a conventional 12V battery that powers accessories, door locks, and the computer systems. These fail just like regular car batteries, and Houston heat kills them just as fast. We test and replace 12V batteries on all hybrid and EV models.

Brakes — hybrids and EVs use regenerative braking, which means the friction brakes wear slower. But they still wear — and they can develop issues from sitting unused (rust, stuck calipers, seized parking brakes). We inspect and service brake systems on hybrids routinely.

Tires — EVs are heavier than equivalent gas cars due to battery weight, and many produce instant torque. Both factors accelerate tire wear. We check tread depth, wear patterns, and tire pressure. Rotation is a tire shop service, but inspection and diagnosis are things we handle on-site.

Cabin air filter — same as any car. Especially important in Houston humidity where mold grows on the AC evaporator.

AC system — hybrid and EV AC systems use electric compressors rather than belt-driven ones, but the refrigerant, condenser, and evaporator components are similar. We can diagnose AC performance and recharge systems that use standard R-134a or R-1234yf refrigerant.

Suspension — EVs and hybrids use the same struts, shocks, control arms, and bushings as conventional cars. We diagnose and replace suspension components on-site.

Wiper blades, lights, and accessories — straightforward maintenance items we handle anywhere.

What requires a specialized shop: - High-voltage battery pack diagnosis or replacement (requires HV certification and specialized equipment) - Electric drive motor or inverter issues - Regenerative braking system calibration on some models - Software updates that require dealer-only tools

Our approach: We work on the 12V side, the mechanical side, and the conventional components. If your issue involves the high-voltage system, we will diagnose what we can and refer you to a qualified EV technician or dealer. No guessing, no overstepping.

Houston's EV and hybrid population is growing fast. We are ready to help with the maintenance these vehicles still need.
