Fall Maintenance Checklist for Houston Drivers
Houston's fall is not about snow tires and winterizing — it is about recovering from summer abuse and preparing for the temperature swings and heavy rain that come with the season change. Here is what to address.
Cooling system recovery: Your cooling system worked overtime all summer. Now is the time to check coolant level, condition, and concentration. Summer heat can evaporate coolant from the overflow tank and degrade the antifreeze properties. If the coolant looks brown or the level is low, top it off or schedule a flush.
Battery check: Summer heat is what kills batteries — but the damage shows up when cooler temperatures arrive and the battery's reduced capacity cannot handle the slightly higher cranking resistance of a cooler engine. If your battery survived summer but seems sluggish in October, it is on borrowed time. Get it load-tested.
Brake inspection: Summer driving — especially road trips, towing, and aggressive traffic — wears brakes hard. Fall is the ideal time to inspect pad thickness and rotor condition before the holiday travel season adds more miles.
Wiper blades: Summer UV destroys wiper rubber. Fall rain in Houston is frequent and sometimes intense. If your wipers streaked or chattered during summer, replace them now before November rain catches you with compromised visibility.
Tire check: Summer heat causes tires to wear faster and can damage sidewalls through UV and heat stress. Check tread depth, look for cracks or bulges, and verify that tire pressures are set correctly as ambient temperatures drop from the 90s into the 50s-60s.
Heater test: Yes, Houston gets cold enough to need the heater — at least from November through February. Turn the heater on and verify it produces hot air within a few minutes of driving. If it does not, the thermostat may be stuck open or the heater core may be partially clogged.
Belts and hoses: Check the serpentine belt for cracks and the radiator hoses for soft spots. Components that survived summer may be on their last stretch. A belt that cracks in summer heat but holds together might snap on a cool morning when the rubber contracts.
Cabin air filter: Summer pollen, mold spores, and road dust have been loading up the cabin filter for months. A fresh filter improves air quality and HVAC efficiency heading into the season of closed windows.
Exterior: Wash the car, including the undercarriage. Summer road grime, construction chemicals, and salt from coastal air (Houston is coastal-adjacent) accelerate corrosion if left in place.
