Stranded on the Side of the Road? Here's What to Do First

FlexFix Team

Breaking down on the side of the road is stressful, especially in Houston traffic. Here's a calm, step-by-step guide for what to do — and when to call a mobile mechanic vs. a tow truck.

Step 1: Get safe Turn on your hazard lights immediately. If you can, coast to the right shoulder or an exit ramp. If you're on a highway, get as far right as possible. Do not try to fix anything while standing next to moving traffic.

Step 2: Assess the situation - Can you still start the car? (Might be an alternator issue — you could make it to a safe parking lot) - Is there smoke, steam, or fluid leaking? (Don't open the hood if you see steam — wait 15 minutes for it to cool) - Is there a burning smell? (This could be brakes, electrical, or clutch — stop driving) - Flat tire? (Can you safely change it where you are?)

Step 3: Decide — mobile mechanic or tow?

Call a mobile mechanic when: - Dead battery (we can test and replace on-site) - Alternator failure (if you're in a safe location like a parking lot) - Flat tire you can't change yourself - Overheating that's stopped (we can diagnose cooling issues once it cools) - Starter failure (common — we replace starters on-site regularly) - Electrical issues (no-start, no-crank scenarios)

Call a tow truck when: - You're in an unsafe location (narrow highway shoulder, blind curve) - Transmission failure (can't move at all) - Major fluid leak making a puddle (oil, coolant, or transmission fluid pouring out) - Accident damage

Step 4: Share your location If you call FlexFix, you can use our Urgent Assistance page to share your GPS pin directly. This saves time — no trying to describe "I'm on 99 somewhere near that one exit."

Step 5: Stay visible and patient Keep hazards on. If you have reflective triangles or flares, set them up behind your vehicle. Stay inside the car if you're on a highway.

FlexFix serves Katy, Sugar Land, Cypress, and greater Houston. For urgent roadside situations, call us directly and we'll let you know if we can help on-site or if a tow is the safer call.
