Power Steering Feels Heavy or Groans? Here's What We Check
If your steering wheel suddenly feels like you are arm-wrestling the car, or you hear a groaning noise when you turn, your power steering system needs attention. Here is how we approach it as mobile mechanics in Houston.
Hydraulic power steering (most pre-2015 vehicles):
Low fluid — the first thing we check. Power steering fluid can leak from hoses, the pump, or the steering rack. Low fluid causes the pump to whine and the steering to feel heavy, especially at low speeds and parking maneuvers.
Leaking hoses — the high-pressure and return hoses degrade over time, especially in Houston heat. We trace the lines looking for wet spots, drips, and cracked fittings.
Worn pump — a failing power steering pump groans under load and may squeal on cold starts. The pump is belt-driven on most vehicles, so we also check the belt condition and tensioner.
Steering rack leak — if fluid is leaking from the boots at either end of the steering rack, the internal seals are failing. Rack replacement is typically a shop job due to alignment requirements, but we can diagnose it mobile and give you an honest referral.
Electric power steering (most 2015+ vehicles):
Warning light — electric systems will trigger a power steering warning or reduced assist message. We scan for codes and test the motor and sensor circuits.
Intermittent loss of assist — this can be a failing motor, a torque sensor, or a wiring issue. Diagnostic scan data helps pinpoint the component.
What we can fix on-site: - Power steering fluid top-off and leak assessment - Hose replacement (high-pressure and return lines) - Power steering pump replacement (1-2 hours on most vehicles) - Belt and tensioner replacement affecting the PS pump - Diagnostic scanning and component testing for electric systems
What needs a shop: - Steering rack replacement (requires alignment afterward) - Internal electric steering motor replacement on some vehicles
If your power steering is acting up, do not ignore it — it will get worse, and driving without power assist in Houston traffic is exhausting and unsafe. Text or call for a mobile diagnostic.
