Spring Car Care Checklist for Houston Drivers
Spring in Houston means wildflower season, pollen everywhere, and the transition from mild weather to punishing heat. It is the perfect time to prepare your car before summer hits full force. Here is what to check.
AC system test: You probably have not used the AC much since October. Turn it on and check: does it blow cold at idle? Any strange smells? Any unusual noises? If anything seems off, schedule AC service now — every mobile mechanic and shop in Houston is booked solid from June through September. Get ahead of the rush.
Coolant level and condition: Check the overflow reservoir. If coolant is low, top it off with the correct type for your vehicle (mixing types can cause problems). If it looks brown, murky, or has floating particles, a flush is due before summer stress-tests your cooling system.
Battery health: Winter in Houston is mild, but batteries still degrade year-round. If your battery is over 2 years old, get it load-tested. Catching a weak battery in April prevents a dead battery in July.
Cabin air filter: Houston pollen season peaks in spring — oak, pine, and grass pollen coat everything. A fresh cabin air filter keeps that out of your lungs. This is a 5-minute swap on most vehicles.
Wiper blades: Spring thunderstorms arrive with little warning. If your wipers streak, skip, or leave smears, replace them. Cheap insurance for visibility.
Tire pressure: As ambient temperatures rise from 60s to 90s, tire pressure increases. Check and adjust to the door sticker specification. Overinflated tires reduce traction, especially in rain.
Brake inspection: If you have been hearing any noise or feeling any vibration when braking, spring is the time to address it — before summer driving adds more miles and heat stress to the braking system.
Exterior and undercarriage: Winter road grime, salt from occasional freezing events, and accumulated dirt can hide corrosion and leaks. A good wash — including the undercarriage — lets you spot issues.
Belts and hoses: Pop the hood and look at the serpentine belt for cracks or fraying. Squeeze the radiator hoses — they should feel firm, not soft or mushy. Replace anything suspicious before it fails in the heat.
Emergency kit refresh: Replace water bottles (they degrade in heat), check your phone charger, and make sure your spare tire is inflated. Texas summers are not the time to be unprepared on the roadside.
Our $60 mobile diagnostic covers all of these checks. Schedule your spring inspection from anywhere in Katy, Sugar Land, Cypress, or Houston — and beat the summer rush.
