Oil Change at Home: What Houston Drivers Should Know

FlexFix Team

An oil change is the simplest maintenance you can do for your engine — and one of the most important. Here's what matters, what doesn't, and why mobile oil changes make sense for Houston-area drivers.

How often should you change your oil?

The old "every 3,000 miles" rule is outdated for most modern vehicles. Most manufacturers now recommend 5,000-7,500 miles for conventional oil and 7,500-10,000 miles for full synthetic. Check your owner's manual — not the sticker the last shop put on your windshield.

That said, Houston driving conditions can be considered "severe service" by many manufacturers: - Frequent short trips (under 10 miles) - Stop-and-go traffic (hello, I-10 and 99) - High ambient temperatures (9 months of the year) - Dusty conditions

If most of your driving matches these conditions, consider the shorter end of the interval.

Conventional vs. synthetic:

Full synthetic oil handles heat better, lasts longer, and flows better at startup. For Houston drivers dealing with 100-degree summers and heavy traffic, synthetic is worth the small premium. Most newer vehicles require it.

What we bring to your driveway:

- Quality oil (we carry conventional, synthetic blend, and full synthetic) - OEM-spec or equivalent oil filter - Drain pan and cleanup supplies - Torque wrench for the drain plug (over-tightening causes stripped threads — a common DIY mistake) - Multi-point visual inspection included at no extra charge

We check your air filter, cabin filter, tire pressure, fluid levels, belt condition, and battery terminals while we're there. If we see something concerning, we'll mention it — no pressure, no upsell.

Time: A typical mobile oil change takes 30-45 minutes. You don't even need to be outside.

Disposal: We take the used oil and filter with us for proper recycling. Your driveway stays clean.

Schedule an oil change in Katy, Sugar Land, Cypress, or anywhere in the Houston metro — call, text, or book online.
