What to Do If Your Car Was in a Minor Fender Bender in Houston

FlexFix Team

You were in a minor collision — maybe a parking lot bump, a low-speed rear-end, or a sideswipe on Westheimer. Nobody is hurt and both cars are drivable. Here is what to do next, and how a mobile mechanic can help before you file a claim.

At the scene:

1. Check for injuries first. Even minor collisions can cause whiplash symptoms that appear hours later.

2. Move vehicles to a safe location if possible. Houston traffic does not wait, and staying in the road creates additional risk.

3. Exchange information: name, phone number, insurance company and policy number, driver's license number, license plate number.

4. Document everything: take photos of both vehicles' damage from multiple angles, the accident scene, street names, traffic signals, and any relevant road conditions.

5. File a police report if damage exceeds $1,000 or if the other driver is uncooperative. You can also file a crash report online through the Texas DOT within 10 days.

6. Contact your insurance company to report the incident, even if you are not filing a claim.

After the scene — mechanical assessment:

Not all collision damage is visible. Even a low-speed impact can affect:

Alignment — a rear-end collision can push the frame or subframe enough to shift alignment. You may notice the car pulling to one side or the steering wheel being off-center.

Bumper reinforcement — the bumper cover may look intact, but the reinforcement bar, foam absorber, or mounting brackets behind it could be bent or broken.

Trunk or hatch alignment — a rear impact can shift the trunk lid, tailgate, or liftgate out of alignment, causing water leaks or wind noise.

Lighting — tail lights, turn signals, or backup lights may have cracked housings that are not obvious from the outside but allow moisture to enter.

Cooling system — a front-end impact can crack the radiator, condenser, or fan shroud. These may not leak immediately but fail under pressure.

Suspension — a side impact or curb strike can bend a control arm, damage a wheel bearing, or crack a steering knuckle.

Airbag sensors — some collision forces trigger airbag warning lights even without airbag deployment. Sensor replacement may be needed.

How we help: We perform a post-collision mechanical inspection at your location. We check alignment indicators, suspension components, steering, cooling system integrity, lighting, and scan for any fault codes triggered by the impact. This gives you documentation of mechanical damage beyond the cosmetic assessment — useful for insurance claims.

Our inspection does not replace a body shop estimate, but it catches mechanical damage that body shops sometimes miss because they focus on body panels and paint.

If you were in a minor collision and the car "seems fine," a $60 inspection can identify hidden damage before it becomes a bigger problem. Schedule from anywhere in Houston.
