How to Prepare Your Car for a Houston Road Trip

FlexFix Team

Planning a road trip from Houston to Austin, San Antonio, Dallas, or the Gulf Coast? A pre-trip inspection can prevent breakdowns on rural stretches of I-10, Highway 290, or I-45 where help may be far away.

Pre-trip checklist

Tires: Check all four tires plus the spare for proper pressure and tread depth. The minimum legal tread depth is 2/32 inch, but for highway safety, replace tires at 4/32 inch. Check for bulges, cracks, or uneven wear. Oil: If you are within 1,000 miles of your next oil change, do it before the trip. Long highway driving at high engine temperatures is harder on oil than city driving. Coolant: Check the coolant level and condition. Houston to West Texas trips cross some of the hottest stretches in the state — your cooling system needs to be in perfect shape. Brakes: A quick brake inspection ensures you have adequate pad material for mountain grades or emergency stops. Belts and hoses: Visually inspect the serpentine belt for cracks and all coolant hoses for swelling or soft spots. Battery: Load test the battery, especially if it is more than two years old. A battery that starts fine in your garage may fail in the Midland heat. Lights: Verify all headlights, taillights, brake lights, and turn signals work. Wipers and washer fluid: Texas thunderstorms can drop visibility to near zero in seconds. Fresh wipers and a full washer fluid reservoir are essential. Air filter: A clogged air filter reduces fuel economy — significant on a long highway trip.

Emergency kit additions

Jumper cables or a portable jump starter. One gallon of coolant (pre-mixed). A quart of your engine's oil. Basic tool kit. Flashlight with fresh batteries. Reflective triangles.
