Car Won't Start in the Morning: Top Causes for Houston Drivers

FlexFix Team

You are running late for work in Katy, you turn the key, and nothing happens. Or maybe it clicks but will not crank. A no-start condition is one of the most frustrating problems — and in Houston, heat and humidity play a role in several common causes.

Top causes of morning no-start

Dead or weak battery. Houston heat kills batteries in two to three years. A battery that started fine yesterday may fail overnight when temperatures drop or after sitting for a weekend. Corroded battery terminals. Houston humidity accelerates corrosion on battery posts. Green or white buildup creates resistance that prevents sufficient current from reaching the starter. Failed starter motor. Worn brushes, a failing solenoid, or a dead spot on the armature can cause intermittent no-start conditions that get worse over time. Bad ignition switch. The electrical contacts inside the ignition switch wear from daily use. The switch may fail to send power to the starter circuit. Fuel pump failure. If the engine cranks normally but will not fire, the fuel pump may have failed. You should hear a brief humming from the fuel tank area when you turn the key to the ON position (before cranking). No hum suggests a dead pump. Clogged fuel filter. A restricted filter can prevent adequate fuel flow for starting, especially after sitting overnight when fuel pressure bleeds down. Faulty crankshaft position sensor. This sensor tells the computer when to fire the spark plugs and fuel injectors. When it fails, the computer does not know the engine is turning and will not trigger combustion.

Quick checks you can do

Turn the headlights on. If they are dim or do not work, the battery is dead. Try jumping the vehicle — if it starts with a jump, the battery or charging system is the problem. Listen for the fuel pump hum when turning the key to ON. Check for any dashboard warning lights that might indicate a specific system failure.
