Alternator vs Battery: How to Tell Which One Actually Failed
Your car died. Someone said it is the battery. Someone else said the alternator. How do you know which one to replace without guessing and wasting money?
Here is how we diagnose it as mobile mechanics in Houston.
Start with the symptoms:
Battery failure symptoms: - Car will not start at all — no crank or slow crank - Headlights work when you first turn the key but dim quickly - Jump-starting works, but the car dies again after sitting overnight - Battery is more than 2-3 years old in Houston heat
Alternator failure symptoms: - Battery warning light on the dashboard while driving - Headlights dim or flicker while the engine is running - Electrical accessories act erratically (radio resets, gauges fluctuate) - Jump-starting works, but the car dies again while driving (not just overnight) - Whining noise from the engine bay that changes with RPM
The key difference: A dead battery means the car cannot start, but once jump-started and running, everything works normally. A bad alternator means the car may start fine on a good battery, but the battery slowly drains while driving because nothing is recharging it.
How we test on-site:
Battery load test — we measure cold cranking amps under load, not just resting voltage. A battery can read 12.4 volts and still fail under the stress of starting.
Alternator output test — with the engine running, we check charging voltage (should be 13.5-14.8 volts) and amperage output. We also test for AC ripple, which indicates failing diodes inside the alternator — a common early failure mode.
Parasitic draw test — if your battery keeps dying overnight but tests fine, something in the car is draining it while parked. We systematically isolate circuits to find the draw.
Can we fix it mobile? Battery replacement: absolutely, 30 minutes on most vehicles. We carry quality batteries with us.
Alternator replacement: yes, on most cars. Typical time is 1-2 hours depending on the vehicle. Some designs (certain BMW, Audi, or rear-mounted alternators) are better suited for a shop, and we will tell you upfront.
Do not guess and throw parts at it — a $60 diagnostic tells you exactly what failed so you pay for the right repair once.
