Why Your Car Won't Start on a Houston Morning

FlexFix Team

You turn the key and nothing happens — or maybe you hear a click, a sluggish crank, then silence. A no-start is one of the most common calls we get in Katy, Sugar Land, and across the Houston metro, especially during summer.

The most frequent causes we diagnose on-site:

Dead or weak battery Houston heat destroys batteries faster than cold weather. If your battery is over two years old, there is a good chance heat has already reduced its capacity below reliable cranking levels. We load-test the battery on the spot — voltage alone does not tell the full story.

Corroded or loose terminals Corrosion builds up on battery posts and can create enough resistance to prevent starting. A quick cleaning and re-torque sometimes solves the problem entirely.

Faulty starter motor A starter that clicks but does not crank is a classic sign. Starters fail gradually — intermittent no-starts that eventually become permanent. We replace starters curbside on most vehicles.

Bad ignition switch or neutral safety switch If there is no click at all, the signal may not be reaching the starter. On automatic transmissions, a failing neutral safety switch can mimic a dead battery.

Fuel pump failure If the engine cranks strong but will not fire, the fuel pump may have quit. We check fuel pressure at the rail to confirm before recommending replacement.

What you can do before calling us: - Check that headlights work (if they are bright, the battery is probably fine) - Try shifting to neutral and starting (bypasses a bad neutral safety switch on automatics) - Listen for the fuel pump hum when you turn the key to ON but do not crank

Our mobile diagnostic covers scan-tool analysis, battery and charging system testing, and a hands-on inspection. If we can fix it on the spot, the $60 diagnostic applies toward labor.
