Why Your Car Pulls to One Side: Alignment, Tires, or Brakes

FlexFix Team

If your vehicle drifts left or right when you let go of the steering wheel on a flat Houston road, something is wrong. The three most common causes are alignment, tires, and brakes — and proper diagnosis matters because the fixes are very different.

Alignment issues

When your wheels are not aligned to factory specifications, the vehicle will pull toward the side with more positive camber or more toe-out. Alignment problems develop from hitting potholes (common on Houston roads after heavy rain), curb impacts, or worn suspension components that allow alignment angles to shift.

Signs of alignment-related pull: steady drift to one side on flat roads, steering wheel off-center when driving straight, uneven tire wear (one edge wearing faster than the other).

Tire-related pull

Mismatched tires (different brands, sizes, or tread depths side to side) can cause a pull. A tire with low pressure on one side also causes the vehicle to drift toward that side. Additionally, some tires develop a condition called radial pull from manufacturing variation — swapping the front tires side to side may eliminate or reverse the pull.

Brake-related pull

A sticking brake caliper on one side applies constant drag, pulling the vehicle toward that side. You may also notice the wheel is hot after driving, a burning smell, or the vehicle pulling more during braking.

Diagnosis approach

A mobile mechanic can check tire pressure and condition, inspect brake caliper operation and temperature, test for worn suspension components that affect alignment, and recommend an alignment check at a shop with an alignment rack if the other causes are ruled out.

FlexFix diagnoses pulling and drifting problems at your location in Katy, Sugar Land, Cypress, and greater Houston. If alignment is needed, we refer you to a trusted facility with proper alignment equipment.
