What to Do When Your Car Overheats in Houston Summer Traffic

FlexFix Team

Houston summer traffic is the worst-case scenario for engine cooling. Idling on I-10 or the Grand Parkway with the AC running full blast and ambient temperatures above 100 degrees pushes cooling systems to their absolute limit. Here is what to do if your temperature gauge starts climbing.

Immediate steps when the gauge spikes

Turn off the AC immediately. The AC condenser adds heat load to the cooling system. Turning it off reduces the demand on the engine. Turn on the heater to maximum. This sounds miserable, but the heater core acts as a secondary radiator — it pulls heat from the engine coolant and dissipates it into the cabin. If the temperature drops, drive to a safe location. If it keeps climbing, pull over immediately and shut off the engine. Open the hood carefully to allow heat to escape, but do not touch the radiator cap. The system is pressurized and can spray boiling coolant.

Do not add cold water to a hot engine. Thermal shock can crack the engine block or cylinder head. Wait at least 30 minutes for the engine to cool before checking coolant level.

Common causes of overheating in Houston

Low coolant level from a slow leak. Failed thermostat stuck in the closed position. Clogged radiator — internal scale buildup or external debris blocking airflow. Failed water pump — no circulation despite coolant being full. Electric cooling fan not running — a failed fan motor, relay, or temperature sensor. Head gasket failure — combustion gases pressurizing the cooling system.

The hidden damage from overheating

Even a single overheating event can cause damage that does not show symptoms immediately. Head gasket sealing surfaces can warp. Piston rings can lose tension from excessive heat. Oil breaks down and loses lubrication properties. Plastic and rubber components in the cooling system become brittle.

Prevention is cheaper than repair

Have your cooling system inspected before Houston summer. A pressure test, thermostat check, coolant condition assessment, and fan operation test costs far less than the engine damage that overheating causes. FlexFix performs cooling system inspections at your location throughout Katy, Sugar Land, Cypress, and greater Houston.
