What Does a Blinking Cruise Control Light Mean?

FlexFix Team

On many vehicles — especially Subaru, Ford, and some Toyota models — a flashing or blinking cruise control light is not actually about cruise control. It is a secondary indicator for an engine or drivetrain problem.

Why the cruise control light flashes:

Shared communication system — the cruise control module communicates with the engine computer and transmission control module. When either detects a fault, the cruise control is automatically disabled (because the system cannot safely maintain speed with an engine fault) and the cruise light flashes to alert you.

Check engine light companion — on many vehicles, a flashing cruise control light appears alongside a check engine light. The check engine light indicates the primary fault, and the cruise light indicates that cruise control has been disabled as a result.

Common underlying causes:

Emission system faults — O2 sensor, catalytic converter codes, EVAP leaks. The engine is running, but the computer has detected an emissions-related fault and disables cruise.

Misfire — active misfires disable cruise control because the engine cannot maintain consistent power output. If the cruise light flashes and the check engine light also flashes, you have an active misfire — reduce speed and schedule service promptly.

Throttle body or electronic throttle issues — since cruise control operates the throttle, any throttle control fault disables cruise and may illuminate its light.

Transmission codes — shift solenoid failures, torque converter faults, or speed sensor issues can disable cruise.

Wheel speed sensor or ABS fault — some cruise control systems rely on wheel speed data. An ABS sensor failure can disable cruise and cause the light to flash.

What to do:

Do not panic — the car is still drivable. The flashing cruise light itself is just telling you that cruise control is temporarily unavailable.

Check for a check engine light — in most cases, there is one. The check engine light codes tell the real story.

Schedule a diagnostic — we scan all modules (engine, transmission, ABS, cruise control) to identify the root cause. Fixing the underlying issue automatically restores cruise control function.

Do not chase the cruise control light specifically. It is almost always a messenger for another system's problem. Fix that problem and the cruise light resolves itself.
