The Complete Guide to Buying a Used Car in Houston Without Getting Scammed

FlexFix Team

The Houston used car market is massive — private sellers on Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, and OfferUp list thousands of vehicles every week. Here is how to protect yourself from buying someone else's problem.

Before you meet the seller

Run the VIN through a free NHTSA recall check and a paid history report (Carfax or AutoCheck). Look for accident history, title status (salvage, flood, rebuilt), odometer rollback flags, and the number of previous owners. For Houston vehicles specifically, check for flood damage history — Harris County experienced major flooding in 2015, 2016 (Tax Day), 2017 (Hurricane Harvey), and 2019 (Tropical Storm Imelda). Thousands of flood-damaged vehicles were titled and resold.

At the meetup

Meet in a public, well-lit location. Bring a flashlight and a tire pressure gauge. Check for signs of flood damage: musty smell, water stains on seat brackets or under the carpet, mismatched interior components, silt deposits in the trunk spare tire well, and rust on underbody components that should not be rusty on a vehicle of that age.

The pre-purchase inspection

This is the most important step. An independent mechanic who has no relationship with the seller inspects the vehicle objectively. FlexFix performs pre-purchase inspections at any location in Katy, Sugar Land, Cypress, or Houston for $60. We check the engine, transmission, brakes, suspension, electrical system, and scan the computer for stored and pending trouble codes.

A 45-minute inspection that costs $60 can save you from a $5,000 mistake. We have caught hidden frame damage, undisclosed engine problems, transmission issues, and flood damage that would not be obvious to a casual buyer.

Negotiating with inspection results

If the inspection reveals issues, you have three options: walk away, negotiate a lower price that accounts for the needed repairs, or ask the seller to fix the issues before closing. Having a written inspection report from a professional mechanic gives you concrete leverage in negotiation.
