Spark Plug Replacement: When It Matters and What We Look For
Spark plugs are one of those maintenance items that people either change too often or completely forget about. Here is what actually matters for Houston drivers.
When to replace spark plugs: Standard copper plugs: every 30,000-40,000 miles Platinum plugs: every 60,000-80,000 miles Iridium plugs: every 80,000-100,000 miles (some manufacturers say 120,000)
Most modern vehicles come with iridium plugs from the factory. Check your owner's manual for the recommended interval.
Signs your plugs need attention:
Rough idle — worn plugs create a weak or inconsistent spark, causing the engine to run unevenly at idle.
Hesitation on acceleration — if the car stumbles or hesitates when you press the gas, worn plugs or failing coils may be to blame.
Poor fuel economy — inefficient combustion from worn plugs wastes fuel. You might not notice a dramatic drop, but it adds up over months.
Hard starting — especially on cold Houston mornings (yes, we do get those occasionally), weak spark makes starting harder.
Check engine light with misfire codes — P0300 through P0308 are misfire codes. P0300 is random misfire, P0301 is cylinder 1, etc.
What we check when replacing plugs:
Plug condition tells a story. The color, wear pattern, and deposits on the old plugs give diagnostic information: - Light tan or gray: normal combustion - Black and sooty: running rich (too much fuel) - White or blistered: running lean or overheating - Oil-fouled: oil getting into the combustion chamber (valve seal or ring issue) - Worn electrode: normal end-of-life wear
We also inspect the ignition coils and boots while we have access. A cracked boot or a weak coil can cause the same symptoms as a bad plug, and it makes sense to address both at the same time if needed.
Mobile spark plug replacement: On most 4-cylinder engines, spark plug replacement takes about an hour. V6 engines with rear-bank access challenges take longer. Some V8 trucks with plug access under the intake manifold are best done in a shop. We will tell you upfront based on your vehicle.
